Titles and Personal Bests:

  • Nil as 2014 will be Louie's first DockDog season

Background:

Little Louie, his two brothers and mom were found abandoned in Lafayette, Louisiana. The pups are a Black Labrador Mix. The "mix" is an unknown but it is thought to be Great Dane. The three pups are all males and named Huey, Duey and Louie. They were taken into a foster home by the New Orleans Labrador Rescue. Their mother was kept in the US for heart worm treatment but the three pups were transported to NOLA’s Ontario chapter. It was a two day transport with volunteers driving the puppies for an hour or two and handing over to the next volunteer driver. Sadly on the second day of transport, the smalled of the three, Louie, became ill. With each handover to the next driver, it was being reported back how sick little Louie was. We were the final volunteer drivers on the last leg of their travels. He was kept wrapped in a towel on my lap and became sicker in front of our eyes. We honestly believed he was going to pass before reaching their foster home. Thankfully he had a WONDERFUL foster mom! She immediately got him into the vet. Sick little Louie had broken with Parvovirus. After a week in quarantine at the vet hospital, two weeks quarantine in a single room in the foster mom's house and a final week of quarantine out of the room but still confined to the house, he was deemed healthy. He came very close to dying and won our hearts on the transport. The day he was permitted to come out of quarantine, he came to live with us. Having been abandoned, his age is an estimate but he was so small, he was definitely younger than the six month of age minimum required to jump with DockDogs in the 2013 season. He has gone swimming in a pool and very much enjoys that -- in fact, enjoys it so much it is hard keeping him out of the pool! Hopefully next year when he is old enough, he'll join his siblings on the dock. He will also be joining his siblings as a canine blood donor. Since he has the Parvovirus antibodies, he will be joining the program when he is a year of age. Then any pups being treated for the disease, his blood can be used in the transfusions and the antibodies will help in the treatment.
